AC Running but Not Cooling in Kingwood? 7 Things to Check Before Calling for Repair

If your air conditioner is running but your Kingwood home is not getting cooler, you may not need to assume the worst.

Sometimes the cause is simple, such as an incorrect thermostat setting, a dirty air filter, or a tripped breaker. Other times, an AC that runs without cooling can point to a frozen evaporator coil, an electrical problem, a refrigerant issue, or a failing component.

Before calling for AC repair, there are several things you can safely check yourself.

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

When an AC is running but not cooling properly, the problem generally falls into one of a few categories:

  • The thermostat is not calling for cooling correctly
  • Airflow through the system is restricted
  • The outdoor condenser is not operating normally
  • The evaporator coil has frozen
  • A condensate safety switch has interrupted operation
  • The system has an electrical or mechanical problem
  • The refrigerant circuit needs professional diagnosis

The checks below can help you rule out some of the simple causes and give your HVAC technician better information if service is needed.

1. Start with the thermostat

This sounds obvious, but it is worth checking before anything else.

Make sure the thermostat is set to Cool and that the temperature setting is several degrees below the current indoor temperature.

Also check the fan setting. For normal cooling, it should usually be set to Auto rather than On. When the fan is set to On, the blower can continue circulating room-temperature air even when the outdoor cooling equipment is not running. That can make it seem like the AC is blowing warm air.

If your thermostat display is blank, possible causes include dead thermostat batteries, loss of power to the indoor HVAC equipment, or another system issue.

Replace thermostat batteries if your model uses them and the batteries are accessible.

If the thermostat remains blank or the system does not respond, move on to the electrical checks below.

2. Check the air filter

A heavily clogged air filter can restrict airflow through the HVAC system.

When there is not enough airflow across the indoor evaporator coil, cooling performance drops. In more severe cases, the coil can become cold enough to freeze.

Remove the filter and check its condition. If it is visibly dirty or packed with dust, replace it with the correct size and type for your system.

During the long Kingwood cooling season, it is a good idea to inspect the filter regularly rather than relying only on a calendar. How frequently it needs to be changed depends on the filter, the HVAC system, pets, household activity, remodeling dust and other conditions.

Many standard filters need replacement more frequently than larger media filters.

A few additional things to check:

  • Make sure the filter is installed in the correct direction.
  • Do not stack multiple filters together.
  • Do not automatically switch to a much more restrictive filter without knowing whether your system is designed for it.
  • Make sure the filter fits properly instead of allowing air to bypass around it.

If replacing a dirty filter restores airflow but the house still is not cooling, there may be another problem.

3. Check the HVAC breakers

A typical central HVAC system has separate electrical power for the indoor equipment and the outdoor condenser.

That means one part of the system can sometimes operate while another does not.

For example, you may hear air blowing through the vents while the outdoor AC unit is completely silent.

Check your home’s electrical panel for an HVAC, AC, furnace, air handler or condenser breaker that has tripped.

If a breaker has tripped, turn the thermostat off before resetting it.

If the breaker trips again, do not continue resetting it. Repeated breaker trips can indicate an electrical or equipment problem that needs to be diagnosed.

Do not open electrical equipment covers or attempt to replace components inside the outdoor disconnect yourself.

A useful clue

If the indoor blower is running but the outdoor unit is not, the problem may be related to power, controls or a component in the outdoor equipment.

That does not identify the failed part, but it is useful information to give the technician.

4. Look at the outdoor AC unit

Next, walk outside and observe the condenser while the thermostat is calling for cooling.

You do not need to open anything.

Look and listen.

Is the outdoor fan running?

Can you hear the unit operating?

Is it starting and stopping repeatedly?

Do you hear humming, buzzing, grinding or another unusual sound?

Is the unit surrounded by leaves, grass clippings, vines, mulch or overgrown landscaping?

Kingwood’s mature trees are one of the things people love about the area, but leaves, pollen and other debris can accumulate around outdoor HVAC equipment.

Keep vegetation and debris from obstructing airflow around the condenser. Required clearances vary by equipment, so follow the manufacturer’s specifications rather than assuming one clearance works for every system.

Do not reach through the condenser grille, remove panels or attempt to manually start a fan.

If the unit hums but the fan does not start, repeatedly tries to start, or makes an unusual electrical or mechanical sound, shut the cooling system off and schedule service.

5. Look for signs of a frozen AC coil

A frozen evaporator coil is a common reason an AC can run for hours without cooling the home properly.

You do not need to remove the air-handler access panel to check for this.

Look for visible ice or frost around accessible refrigerant tubing near the indoor equipment or outdoor unit. You may also notice:

  • Very weak airflow from the vents
  • Water near the indoor unit after the ice begins melting
  • The AC running for long periods without lowering the temperature
  • Frost or ice on exposed portions of the refrigerant line

A frozen coil can result from several problems, including restricted airflow or an issue that requires professional diagnosis.

If you see ice, turn Cooling off.

If the blower is operating normally, setting the thermostat fan to On can help circulate air while the system thaws. Do not continue operating the system in cooling mode while it is frozen.

Check the filter as well. A severely dirty filter may have contributed to the airflow problem.

If the system freezes again after thawing, schedule AC service. Repeated freezing is a symptom of an underlying problem, not something that should simply be thawed over and over.

Do not try to add refrigerant yourself.

6. Check for a condensate drain problem

Air conditioning does more than lower temperature. It also removes moisture from indoor air.

During hot, humid Kingwood weather, that can mean a significant amount of condensate water moving through the drain system.

Many HVAC installations have a safety or float switch designed to interrupt cooling if water backs up. This helps reduce the risk of condensate overflowing and damaging the home.

Signs of a possible condensate problem include:

  • AC suddenly stops cooling
  • Water around the indoor HVAC equipment
  • Water in an auxiliary drain pan
  • A wet ceiling near attic-mounted equipment
  • A thermostat that appears normal but the cooling equipment will not operate

If you see water where it should not be, take it seriously, particularly with equipment installed above a finished ceiling.

Do not bypass or disable a condensate safety switch just to make the AC run.

A clogged drain can often be corrected without major HVAC repairs, but the source of the water should be confirmed before the system is put back into normal operation.

7. Check the supply vents and return airflow

Walk through the house and check the vents.

Make sure supply registers are open and are not blocked by furniture, rugs, curtains or other objects.

Then check the larger return-air grilles. They should also be unobstructed.

Closing a large number of supply vents is usually not a good way to save energy. Your HVAC system was designed to move a certain amount of air, and excessive restriction can create airflow and comfort problems.

Pay attention to whether the airflow problem affects the entire house or only one area.

Weak airflow everywhere can point toward a filter, blower, coil or other system-wide airflow problem.

Normal airflow in most rooms but very weak airflow in one area may point toward a duct, damper or distribution issue.

Again, these observations do not diagnose the system. They help narrow down where the problem may be.

These symptoms can have more than one possible cause. A technician still needs to test the system before determining what actually failed.

Should you keep running an AC that is not cooling?

It depends on what the system is doing.

If you discover a simple thermostat setting or a dirty filter and correcting it restores normal operation, continued use may be fine.

Turn the cooling system off and have it checked if you notice:

  • Ice on the system
  • A breaker that repeatedly trips
  • Burning or strong electrical odors
  • Buzzing or grinding from the equipment
  • An outdoor fan that is not operating normally
  • Water threatening a ceiling or electrical components
  • The system repeatedly attempting and failing to start

Running a malfunctioning AC continuously does not usually make the underlying problem disappear and can sometimes turn a smaller problem into a more expensive one.

Why AC problems can show up quickly in Kingwood summers

Kingwood air conditioners operate under demanding conditions for much of the year.

Long cooling seasons mean more runtime. High humidity means the system also has to remove substantial moisture from indoor air. Mature trees and landscaping can contribute leaves, pollen and debris around outdoor condensers.

Those conditions make a few basic maintenance items especially important:

  • Keep filters from becoming excessively dirty
  • Keep return-air paths unobstructed
  • Keep vegetation and debris away from outdoor equipment
  • Pay attention to condensate drainage

If your home feels cool but unusually humid, that is worth mentioning during HVAC service too. Temperature is only one part of indoor comfort.

Does an AC that is not cooling need repair or replacement?

Not necessarily.

An AC that stops cooling does not automatically mean you need a new system.

Some no-cooling calls turn out to be relatively contained repairs. Others uncover a major component failure or a system that has accumulated several problems.

The decision to repair or replace should consider the whole picture:

  • Age and overall condition of the equipment
  • Type and cost of the current repair
  • Whether the system has needed repeated repairs
  • Whether major components are still under warranty
  • Cooling performance throughout the house
  • Indoor humidity control
  • Condition of the ductwork and airflow
  • Energy use
  • Type of refrigerant
  • Expected remaining service life of the equipment

For example, an older system with an otherwise good service history and a small repair may still make sense to fix. Age by itself does not automatically justify replacement.

On the other hand, repeated failures or an expensive major-component repair on aging equipment may make replacement worth comparing.

A good HVAC diagnosis should give you enough information to compare those options rather than assuming every older system needs to be replaced.

What if your AC uses R-22 refrigerant?

Some older air-conditioning systems still use R-22 refrigerant.

Production and import of new R-22 in the United States ended in 2020, but existing R-22 systems can still be serviced using available reclaimed or previously produced refrigerant.

That does not mean an R-22 system automatically needs to be replaced.

It does mean refrigerant type is one factor worth considering when deciding how much money to put into a major repair on older equipment.

If you are not sure what refrigerant your system uses, the equipment data plate or an HVAC technician can identify it.

When to call for AC repair

If you have gone through the basic checks above and the AC still is not cooling, it is time to diagnose the system properly.

You should also call for service rather than continue troubleshooting if:

  • The breaker trips more than once
  • You see ice that returns after thawing
  • The outdoor unit hums but does not operate normally
  • You suspect a refrigerant problem
  • There is water around attic-mounted HVAC equipment
  • You smell burning or electrical odors
  • The system is making unusual mechanical noises
  • The AC runs continuously without bringing the temperature down
